The Trundles Phenomenon

The bed market is absolutely flooded with trundles.  If you were looking for these a few years back your choices would have been quite limited, now there are so many great designs out there that you really do need to do your homework before you hit the shops.

What Are Trundles?

The word trundle refers to motion on wheels; the bus trundled along.  Trundle beds are about being easily movable.  However, as with anything which you can move out of the way – you need somewhere to move it to.  So the trundle bed is designed specifically to fit under another bed.  It is a simple, but very efficient way of creating extra sleeping space.

Designs Of Trundles

There are two basic designs of trundles.  The first is a low bed which simply slides out from underneath the other bed.  The second design came later and is very clever.  It is a pop up trundle.  This means that the ‘extra’ bed can be increased to the height of a standard bed.  This has a couple of advantages; firstly it looks nicer in a room, as one bed is not on the ground.  Secondly, the trundle can be put next to the main bed to create a king size bed for your guests.

What Beds Can Have A Trundle?

Technically any bed can have a trundle under it; however, it is not quite that simple.  If you are furnishing a bedroom, it is definitely best to be a bed and trundle combo.  This means that the trundle will fit under properly and if it is a pop up trundle, it will pop up to the correct height.

What To Consider Before Buying A Trundle

Apart from buying a trundle you will need to also buy a mattress and trundle bed covers.  If you are planning to use the trundle and the bed to make a king size then the mattresses should be the same.  Whatever trundle you buy you should also invest in the trundle bed covers.  Trundle bed covers serve several purposes, firstly they make the bed and trundle combo look more attractive, and secondly they act as a dust cover.  This means that you can actually partially prepare the bed before your guest arrives and then pull it out knowing that the covers will have kept the linen fresh.

What Are Trundle Beds Made From

Traditionally the trundle bed frame was wooden, however, there are now metals ones available.  The metal ones are often slightly cheaper; however they are also not always as attractive.  It is certainly worth considering all options, however as with most things, you get what you pay for.

So, whether you are furnishing a living room with a day bed and trundle or a guest room or a kid’s room you can be sure that there is the perfect trundle out there.  Since this market has become so popular there is a great range of trundles to choose from and there are certainly bargains to be had.
